NEET Conference 2010

NEET

Numbers increasing, opportunities reducing — is there a need for a new approach?

The dramatic increase in the number of young people who are Not in Employment, Education or Training (NEET) over the last year is focusing the attention of Government and other agencies on how to best deal with the plight of youth unemployment. It is calculated that the NEET numbers have increased by more than 100,000 in the last year with close to 1 in 6 or 16% of young people now falling into this category. This comes at a time when there is a considerable burden on policymaking in the sector due to new Government Departments, new agencies and new responsibilities to Local Authorities encompassing the changes to the Machinery of Government.

Due to the success of our previous NEET Conferences held in 2007, 2008 and 2009 this follow-on fourth national conference will press all the Departments and Agencies to clarify their policies and provide what indications they can to show how we can address this potentially lost cohort of young people.  The conference will also demonstrate feedback from successful projects and unpick the good practice approaches where positive interventions have taken place whilst suggesting some core issues that exist when enabling these young people to re-engage with learning or employment.

The Conference will be Chaired by Dr Howard Williamson CBE, Professor of European Youth Policy at the University of Glamorgan.

Who should attend?

All organisations with an active interest in the NEET cohort to include; learning providers, LSC’s, Schools, Colleges, Universities, Chambers of Commerce, Local Authorities, Business Links, Connexions, Children’s Services, Youth workers, Careers Advisors, Charities, Voluntary organisations, Learning Partnerships, Education Business Partnerships, Employers, Youth Offending teams, LEAs and new Government agencies.

Attendance at this conference will provide an excellent opportunity to network and share best practice.
